The short answer
To get mold out of a car, first find and stop the water getting in, then dry the interior completely, vacuum the loose spores with a HEPA vacuum, and clean the affected carpet and upholstery with a hot-water extractor. Hard surfaces can be wiped with a mild cleaner. If the carpet padding stays wet or the growth covers large areas, it needs a professional deep shampoo and odor treatment, and soaked padding may need replacing.
Five signs your car has mold
Mold in a car is usually a moisture problem first. Look for:
- A musty smell when the heat comes on: damp carpet and foam smell worst when they warm up
- White or grey-green fuzzy spots on carpet edges, seat bases or seat belts
- Carpet that's damp under the floor mats
- Windows that fog on every drive, a sign moisture is trapped inside
- A stuffy nose that starts when you get in the car and stops when you get out
Why Seattle-area cars get moldy
Months of rain mean wet shoes, wet dogs and wet umbrellas go straight into the footwells. Water also gets in through blocked sunroof drains, worn door seals and cowl drains packed with needles and leaves. In a car that stays closed, carpet and seat foam never fully dry, and that's what mold needs.
What you can do yourself
Wear gloves and a mask rated for dust (N95) while you work, and keep the doors open.
- Find the leak: lift the mats, feel the carpet, and check the sunroof drains, door seals and the area under the windshield
- Dry it out: on a dry day leave the doors open, run the heat with the windows cracked, or use a dehumidifier or moisture absorber overnight
- Vacuum with a HEPA filter so you're not blowing spores around
- Wipe hard surfaces (dash, console, door panels) with a mild interior cleaner
- Avoid bleach on upholstery and carpet: it discolors fabric and doesn't reach the growth inside the foam
When to call a professional
If the smell is back a week after you've cleaned, the growth is deeper than the surface. Hot-water extraction pulls water and dirt out of the carpet and seat foam instead of pushing it further in, and an odor treatment deals with what's left in the air system and fabrics.
We can do this in your driveway. Every mold job is different, so send us a photo and you'll get the price before we start: a Signature Detail is $349, Deep Shampoo +$99 and Odor Kill +$79. If the padding under the carpet is soaked through, or the car was in a flood, we'll tell you honestly that it needs replacing or an insurance claim rather than a detail.
Common questions
Is mold in a car dangerous?
Mold can irritate the nose, throat and lungs, especially for people with allergies or asthma. If the car makes you feel unwell, keep the windows open and get it cleaned and dried properly.
Will vinegar kill mold in a car?
Vinegar can clean light surface growth on hard surfaces, but it won't fix carpet or seat foam that stays damp. Drying the car and extracting the fabric is what stops it coming back.
How much does car mold removal cost?
With Scrub Bros, a mold job is usually a $349 Signature Detail plus Deep Shampoo (+$99) and, if a smell stays, Odor Kill (+$79). Send a photo and you get the exact price first.
